Guitar & Dramatic Arts

Upholding the value that all martial skill should be balanced by cultural art & craft study, the Academy provides instruction in Musical & Dramatic Arts as well as Self Defense. Current classes include:

·          Beginning Acoustic Guitar …… Don’t just learn Chords, learn to play in key and actually make music. Develop the fundamentals of rhythm, flat top guitar the old fashioned way. Private & Semi – Private classes are ˝ hour long and include: Understanding the guitar as more than an instrument … learning how to “Walk the Fingers” from one chord to the other … use of bar chords … straight pick and finger roll patterns … use of the capo … learn to transpose music … learn up to 30 chords per key.

·          Public Speaking …… Learn how to properly speak before small groups and/or crowds. Develop your poise and posture. Take control and efficiently prepare what you want to say. Learn how to use a podium. Don’t just talk “at” people, talk “to” them. Private, Semi – Private, and Group classes are available.

·          Oral Rendering of Prose …… Reading in front of people is much more than just reading words out loud. Learn how to grasp the meaning of a literary piece. Control the fluctuation of your voice. Use punctuations in the manner of the author’s intent. Read with authority, passion, and enthusiasm. Private, Semi – Private, and Group classes available.

·          Solo & Group Drama …… A play is about more than memorizing lines and horsing around. It is a story to be told through every motion of your body, the setting, and your interaction with the audience. Learn how to get into the mind of the character(s) you are portraying. Feel the intent of the story you and your troupe are attempting to relay. Develop the skills of voice projection & fluctuation, facial acting, body language, and improvisation. What happens if you forget your lines? The script is a guideline, not a prison. Private, Semi – Private, and Group classes are available.

 

 

Free Public Programs

·        T’ai Chi in the Park …… This program is available in support of Non Profit Organizations. This class is held outside in one of the various parks of Hickory, NC. Beginning with a complete 9 Section Standing Brocade routine, the program then proceeds with the 72 Step Jiu Ling Taiji Form. Practitioners of any traditional Taiji style will feel at home. Beginners will appreciate the smooth, easy to follow instructional tone of J Patrick Nelson’s vocal cadence. Material is available and Questions are attentively answered after the program. ·        Abuse Aware …… These classes and are tailored for single moms and Abused/Battered Women. This is a seminar style program which may be offered as a one or two hour class A Support Talk will be given in regard to Abuse and Abuse Awareness, followed by instruction in relevant Self Defense techniques. These programs may be held at the Academy, but are available for free to local Non – Profit organizations. Seminars

J Patrick Nelson, MhD is available for Seminars on a wide variety of subjects. These may be Physical Training Seminars or Motivational Talks. Topics include but are not limited to the following:
