Principles of San Zhou Gong

Once upon a time, going to see the doctor actually meant a visit with the individual we trusted to take care of our health. We would sit down, discuss the problem, get checked, receive some treatment, maybe a prescription. It was very personal. Some of us can even remember when the doctor made house calls.

Now you walk in, fill out several forms, talk to a person or three, fill out another form or so, talk to someone else, sign something else, talk to yet another person, then wait for about a half hour to forty–five minutes, then see a doctor's assistant (rather than the actual doctor) for less than five minutes. After that the treatment is administered by nurses, then there is more to fill out and sign … and that is just a visit to the Emergency Room. A regular appointment may get us a two hour wait for maybe five whole minutes with our physician, hoping we don’t get sent to someone else. If we aren’t careful we could find ourselves visiting four or five different Specialists, all with their required forms, waits, and multi-person interviews before seeing the actual Expert.

People are looking for options. Yoga, shiatsu, deep tissue massage, reflexology, homeopathy, acupuncture, and magnet therapy are all alternative forms of wellness that are being sought after. Yet to gain the benefits of each of these disciplines, one would have to visit several different therapists and enroll in a variety of programs.

San Zhou Gong (pronounced “san – joe – gong”) is a single system of wellness which produces many benefits including an enhanced immune system, increased flexibility, stress management, relief from a multitude of illnesses and disorders, and much more. The exercises practiced in San Zhou Gong are all based upon Energy Manipulation, Balance and Release, which is to work with the Chi (also spelled Qi), or living energy in the body. This energy is also referred to as Bio-energy, Ki, and Prana.

Those familiar with the Twelve Meridians associated with acupuncture should also understand the Conception and Governing vessels. These form a circuit that runs down the front of the body, and then up the back. In Chinese Chi Gong, the basis of Chinese medicine, this is known as the Small Heavenly Cycle.

Two other circuits, one which runs from the back down under the arms to the palms and back, and another which runs down the back of the legs to the soles of the feet and up the front, join with the Small Heavenly Cycle to form the Greater Heavenly Cycle. This is the basis of San Zhou Gong.

The Greater Heavenly Cycle interconnects with and governs the Twelve Meridians, opens and regulates the Chakra of the body, activates and maintains what is known as the Triple Burner. The course of this cycle can be compared to the flow of a great, three river system which regulates the many streams, creeks, and tributaries within the body. This cycle is active in all living creatures whether is understood or not. What isn’t commonly known is that the flow of this cycle can be strengthened, much like aerobic activity strengthens the heart and circulatory system. The exercises used to strengthen this cycle are simple and not difficult to learn. These exercises have been used to relieve and combat such challenges as Neurological Disorders, Allergies, Asthma, Tumors, Diabetes, Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Sinusitis, Respiratory Diseases, and Cancer, just to name a few. These exercises have been successfully used in a wide range of rehabilitation cases as well.

Learning San Zhou Gong as a practice involves study with a qualified instructor. This can be accomplished in either private or group classes. The Taiji/Chinese Yoga classes taught at the American Nine Lotus Academy include this discipline.

Private Sessions for instruction of San Zhou Gong are by appointment only and are tailored to the individual needs and/or concerns of the individual. All sessions begin with breathing exercises to calm the mind. The session will then move into various combinations of relaxation therapy to stimulate chi flow including Guided Meditation, Stand Like the Tree (also called Standing on Stake) Chi Gong, 9 Section Standing Brocade exercises, Radial Chi Gong Therapy, Seated Chair Chi Gong, 9 Section Seated Brocade exercises and oher forms of Breathing and/or Stretching practices … depending on the purpose of the session.

Radial Chi Gong Therapy

Based on the deep breathing principles of Chinese Chi Gong (also referred to as Qi Gong and Chi Kung), Radial Chi Gong Therapy (RCT) is completely natural, non-invasive, relaxed, and does not require removal of clothing, leaves no residual bruising or side effects and predates Western Medicine by at least 4000 years. Simply put, RCT is based on activation of Chakra Centers, the Triple Burner and regulation of the Jing. The methods used are sometimes identified as "Techniques to affect the Human Energy Field," and are not to be confused with Western practices of massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy and body work therapy.

The Conventional Medicine of which we are accustomed to tends to focus on the Symptoms of our physical problems. A vast percentage of our problems are addressed with synthetic medications, the side effects of which often seem to be worse than the original problem. Another percentage of our problems are addressed by surgery. Yet the actual Cure Ratios of Conventional Medicine is remarkably low.

Chinese Medicine looks at the cause of our problems. In rectifying the cause, the symptoms are automatically addressed. This is accomplished by regulating the flow of Chi in the body. These flows can be compared to three primary Rivers in the body (see Greater Heavenly Cycle above), and when Stagnate Pools in the body emerge then illness occurs. The practice of San Zhou Gong and Radial Chi Gong Therapy addresses these stagnate pools through a variety of techniques. These techniques may be performed seated or on a padded table.
