We are proud to have raised nearly $2500.00 for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The date for our 3rd Annual event is Saturday, April 18, 2009. The following includes instructions to the event, an order of events, and rules for the event. For a printable version of these rule simply send us an email. On behalf of the children, Thank You for helping us support this important cause. LOCATION: From I 40 take Exit 123 onto US 321 South, as if headed toward Lincolnton and Gastonia. Take the next Exit, Exit 42, onto 127. At the top of the ramp turn left and follow 127 North. Follow the directions below. From US 321 take Exit 42 onto 127. At the top of the ramp follow 127 North. From the bridge at the Exit, drive approximately ¾ of a mile to the next red light. Turn right onto South Center Street. About 1 ½ mile on the left is Brookford Community Center. From Hwy 70 (West Hickory) turn South at the Paramount Kia / Mc Donald’s red light. Cross the bridge and about ½ mile on the left is the Brookford Community Center. Point Sparring and Kick – A – Thon will be performed inside in the auditorium. ORDER OF EVENTS: • 7:30 AM …… Doors open to receive registrations and accept spectators. • 8:00 AM …… Walk – a – Thon begins (1 lap around the building = 1 unit point, 5 laps = 1 mile). • 9:30 AM …… Wood Breaking Division begins. • Empty Hand Forms Division begins after Wood Breaking Division ends. • Weapon Forms Division begins after Empty Hands Forms Division ends. • ½ hour break after Weapons Forms Division. • Hamburger & Hotdog Plate Lunch begins being served in cafeteria approximately 11:30 (advance lunch tickets will be sold). This is part of the fund raiser. • Drink & Snack Machines available in hallway. Restrooms available on both ends of building. • T’ai Chi and Weapon Sparring Demonstration after Lunch Break. • Talent Division after Demonstration • Self Defense Demonstration after Talent Division. • Point Sparring Division begins after Demonstration ends. • Kick – A – Thon Division begins after Point Sparring Division ends. • Over – All Points Championship awarded after Kick – A – Thon. DONATIONS: • $35.00 minimum donation to participate for the day (individuals with sponsorship forms are exempt). • $ 5.00 minimum donation for Spectators. • $ 6.00 donation for lunch (hotdog or hamburger plate w/condiments, baked beans, chips and drink). • $ 8.00 donation for lunch (2 sandwiches of choice plate w/condiments, baked beans, chips and drink). • Make ALL checks payable to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. SPONSORING & RAISING DONATIONS: • Find Sponsors to donate per each point you raise during the event. • Find Sponsors to donate a set amount just for you participating in the event. • The maximum points a Sponsor will be accountable for is 108 Points. • All points earned will be added up at the end of the day to determine totals. There is no limit as to how many points a player can accumulate for purpose of end of day total. RULES: WOOD BREAKING • With the exception of rain, all players will set up on the sidewalk in front of and around Brookford Community Center. In case of rain, the Division will be held inside the American Nine Lotus Academy Studio (room 203). • Each player shall provide their own wood, spacers, and supports (any player who presents a receipt for wood cost, will in turn be given a receipt for tax deduction purposes). • All wood pieces should be 1” pine, pre – cut to 6” x 12” in size. • Supports shall be placed so that the strike point of the positioned wood is approximately level to the performer’s “Belt Line.” Performers demonstrating “Held Breaks” shall provide their own assistants. • For sake of safety and continuity, “Striking Technique” choices are limited to the following: • Axe Hand (also called a “Knife Hand”, “Outside Ridge Hand”, and “Shoto”). • Descending Elbow (a vertical technique from a standing position). • Hammer Fist (also called a “Clubbed Fist”). • Hammer Heel Kick (also called an “Axe Kick” and “Downward Heel Hook Kick”). • Side Kick. • Toe Thrust (a forward kick delivered with the sole, or ball, of the foot). • Players may demonstrate any of the above described “Striking Techniques” in any order, in any sequence, for as many repetitions as desired. Nor is the player required to demonstrate all of the above described techniques. The Promoter must approve any techniques not mentioned above, for purpose of safety. • There is no “Time Limit” where – by the player must complete their routine, but all successive strikes should be executed within 20 – 30 seconds of each other. • Players are responsible for clearing their own area. A container will be provided to dispense broken wood, as an option to taking debris home. • If a player fails to complete a break in two tries, the piece must be removed and another piece may be attempted. • If a player fails a maximum of three breaks, their sequence is brought to an end. • At the first sign of blood or injury, a player’s sequence is brought to an end. • One completed break is equal to one “Accrued Point.” • The number of wood pieces which equal one “Accrued Point” is as follows: o Gals under16 years of age ……… 1 piece of wood per technique. o Gals 16 years of age and older……… 1 piece of wood per technique. o Guys under13 years of age ……… 1 piece of wood per technique. o Guys 13 – 17 years of age ……… 2 pieces of wood per technique. o Guys 18 years of age and older ……… 3 pieces of wood per technique. • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Place Awards will be presented based on total “Accrued Points.” • At end of the day, an “Event Points Championship” will be awarded based on total “Accrued Points” for all divisions combined. RULES: FORMS • Ring Size …… 18’ x 27’ on a cloth top, gymnastic training floor • Time Limit, 3 minutes. • Points …… All scores will be based on an 8 – 10 point scale, beginning from a base of 9.00 for an average performance. • All Points will be totaled on each player’s card to hold up for the “Event Points Championship”, and for players who are earning points toward “Sponsorship Point Totals.” These points will be rounded off to the nearest whole number for “Point Totals.” • In adherence to Kizoku – Ryu Kai standards and belief, that a belt rank skill should equal a belt rank skill, there will be no age divisions in Forms Competition. • Divisions are divided as: o Novice (White, Yellow, Orange) o Intermediate (Purple, Green, Blue) o Advanced (Brown, Red – Korean Arts) o Expert (Black and Beyond) • Uniforms …… Any clean and well maintained uniform of traditional cut, or Demonstration Team design, is acceptable. • Uniforms may NOT have holes or tattered or cut edges. • T – shirts MUST be of heavy quality (and not of see – through material). • T – shirts MUST be of solid color. • T – shirts may NOT have ANY markings other than a martial school/academy logo. • T – shirts MUST be long enough to stay INSIDE the contact/kick – boxing pant even while engaged in sparring (exposed midriffs will not be allowed). • Sleeveless T – shirts and Uniform Tops are NOT acceptable, although Uniform Tops with sleeves rolled up ARE acceptable. • Uniforms may NOT display ANY derogatory emblems or unseemly patches, but there are no limits as to the number of patches displayed. • Gal players will utilize a sport’s bra, regardless of whether or not a T – shirt is worn. • Empty Hands …… Any Traditional or Classic Form may be used. This is NOT a contemporary competition for gymnastic and/or dance kata. Japanese / Okinawan Forms may not employ head high kicks, except in the case of the Okinawan kata, “Suparinpei.” • Weapon Forms …… Any Traditional or Classic Form may be used. This is NOT a contemporary competition for gymnastic and/or dance kata. Weapons may not be of combat grade and must be first approved by the Arbitrator. • Automatic Disqualification: o ANY player who puts the point or butt of a weapon down against the floor, or delivers a strike against the floor, will be immediately disqualified for disrespect to the gymnastic floor. RULES: TALENT DIVISION • Players may demonstrate anything including, but not limited to the following: • Self Designed/Choreographed Musical or Gymnastic Martial Kata. • Traditional or Choreographed (skit) Self Defense. • Non – Martial, Gymnastic Floor Routine. • Musical Performances. • Dance Performances. • Dramatic & Speaking Performances. • R.O.T.C. Color Guard Rifle Drills. • Any clean and family oriented talent routine or performance. • Time Limit: 5 minutes. • Points …… All scores will be based on an 8 – 10 point scale, beginning from a base of 9.00 for an average performance. • All Points will be totaled on each player’s card to hold up for the “Event Points Championship”, and for players who are earning points toward “Sponsorship Point Totals.” These points will be rounded off to the nearest whole number for “Point Totals.” RULES: POINT SPARRING • Ring Size …… 18’ x 27’ on a cloth top, gymnastic training floor • Rounds …… Each player will be guaranteed two, 3 minute rounds. • Winning Points …… No “Rounds” will be stopped due to “Sudden Death”. The player with the most accumulated points at the end of the “Round” will be declared “Winner of the Round.” • Semi – Finals …… After each player has completed their two rounds, each player’s points will be totaled. The top four point accumulators will then be matched for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Place of the Division. Any point ties will be matched to produce the top four players for Semi – Finals. • All Points will be totaled on each player’s card to hold up for the “Event Points Championship”, and for players who are earning points toward “Sponsorship Point Totals”. • Uniforms …… Any clean and well maintained uniform of traditional cut, or Demonstration Team design, or contact/kick – boxing pants with a solid T – shirt of heavy weight quality is acceptable. • Uniforms may NOT have holes or tattered or cut edges. • T – shirts MUST be of heavy quality (and not of see – through material). • T – shirts MUST be of solid color. • T – shirts may NOT have ANY markings other than a martial school/academy logo. • T – shirts MUST be long enough to stay INSIDE the contact/kick – boxing pant even while engaged in sparring (exposed midriffs will not be allowed). • Sleeveless T – shirts and Uniform Tops are NOT acceptable, although Uniform Tops with sleeves rolled up ARE acceptable. • Uniforms may NOT display ANY derogatory emblems or unseemly patches, but there are no limits as to the number of patches displayed. • ALL players will utilize foam dipped Punches, Kicks, and Helms (head gear) of good repair. Taped equipment or equipment with compromised surfaces is NOT acceptable. • “Face Shields” are optional, but must be in good repair. • Chest Protectors are optional at the player’s discretion, but must be provided by the player. • ALL players will utilize proper mouth guards. • Gal players will utilize a sport’s bra, regardless of whether or not a T – shirt is worn. • Guy players will utilize “Hard Cup” groin protection. • Legal Strikes …… All strikes utilized should be such as are practical in a “Street – Wise” situation, but with controlled fashion and of “Tag – Force”. For the sake of safety and enjoyment of players, the following techniques are acceptable at this St. Jude’s Fund Raising event: o ALL techniques must be applied with controlled contact and specific intent. Slop techniques and wild, Guess – Work/Hopeful techniques do not warrant scores (if the player isn’t LOOKING at their target, they are trying to be lucky). o Any “Closed – Fisted” technique such as a Jab, Cross, Hook, Back - Fist. o Inside and Outside Ridge – Hand techniques. o Controlled kicking techniques with the “Foot Proper”. • Strikes Zones include and are limited to: o Sides of the head. o Forehead (simulating a “Jab Punch”) and back of the head. o Torso, ribs, and kidney areas. • Illegal Strikes …… ANY execution of the following will warrant an automatic penalty point. If three such violations occur in any round, the offending player shall be automatically disqualified. o Any strike with intent to the groin area. Two accidental strikes to the groin area dictates that the given player has no control and/or is “Wild” and is to be automatically disqualified. o Any strike with intent to the face area. Two accidental strikes to the face area dictates that the given player has no control and/or is “Wild” and is to be automatically disqualified. o Strikes to the neck/throat area. o Strikes to the spinal area. o Strikes to the legs. • Leaving the Ring …… The “Center Referee” does NOT need to wait for a majority call to award a penalty point due to a player’s intentional retreat to the extent of leaving the ring. • Falls …… ANY time both hands of a player touch the ground the “Center Referee” may call break. • Ground Fighting …… INTERMIDIATE LEVELS and ABOVE …… Any time a player goes “Down” with control, a 3 – Count is initiated to allow continued defense/offense. o The “Top Player” may score downward with a controlled punch to the head or body, or controlled “SIMULATION” kick to the torso …… the foot may NOT make contact NOR attempt a score to the head of a “Guarding Player”. o The “Guarding Player” may strike upward to any legal zone. • Ground Fighting …… INTERMIDIATE LEVELS and ABOVE …… Clean sweeps are allowed. • Point Scale: o Any legal kick & strike = 1 Point. o Clean sweeps or leg scissor technique (which results in a full takedown) = 1 Point. • Leaving the Ring: • The Center Referee may award an immediate “Penalty Point” to any player who leaves the ring of their own intention, either by backing away from and/or running from a player, or who drops down for Ground Fighting as an attempt to escape her/his opponent or “buy time.” • Any time any player leaves the ring, and/or falls or is knocked from the ring will give cause for a “Break in Action”. • Awarding of Points: o Under Belts …… Points are awarded by majority of 2 corner judges and 1 Center Referee. o Black Belts …… Points are awarded by majority of 4 corner judges and 1 Center Referee. • Coaches: • Each player may have a “Coach” who must stay in the designated “Coach’s Box.” • Time – Out: o Each “Coach”, or a player not represented by a “Coach,” may request 1 “Time – Out” per round. This must be done during a “Break in Action.” o “Time – Out” duration is 10 seconds, which is counted by the Center Referee. • Water, or other fluids, may NOT be administered during the course of a round. • During a called “Time – Out,” each player may join their respective “Coaches.” • Automatic Disqualification: o ANY player or coach who is rude to another player, coach, judge, or Center Referee may be instantly disqualified and will forfeit all earned points accrued toward “Event Points Championship.” RULES: KICK – A – THON • Players will address their respective bag and commence kicking with any kicking technique of waist height and above until they are done. • 5 kicks will equal “1 Point.” • Any successful “Spinning Kick” will count as “1 Point.” • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Place Awards will be presented based on total “Accrued Points”. Ties will match up for a “Fast 40 Challenge” (fastest person to deliver 40 bag kicks above the belt line). RULES: EVENT POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP • At the end of the competitive day, all points earned by each individual player will be tallied into a total score. The individual with the highest score will be declared “Event Points Champion”. • Ties will match up for a “Fast 40 Challenge.” AWARDS: • ALL players who donate, or raise a minimum of, $35.00 receive a Certificate and a T – Shirt from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
