A Brief Background of FSDC

J Patrick Nelson began teaching privately after reaching Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) and endorsed as Sensei by Shidoshi Pat Arnold (as per tradition) in 1981. At first he primarily taught military personnel, then Women’s Self Defense classes. After moving to the Unifour in 1995, Professor Nelson began teaching out of his garage until 1998, when he opened his first commercial studio in west Hickory. In 2000 he was contracted by Hickory City YMCA to start their first T’ai Chi program, which he ran until 2002. In March 2003 Professor Nelson left his public job to teach fulltime in Brookford Community Center, offering classes 6 days a week with specific focus on Self Defense, Combat Kempo & Ju Jutsu, Chinese Kick-Boxing, Stick-Fighting and more. Because some people still ask, Mountain View Karate used to have a club in Brookford (they vacated Brookford early 2007). We are not now, and never have been a part of their organization. |
Our Purpose & Mission

Our ultimate purpose at FSDC is to prepare the individual for defense in the Real World. Competition can be fun, but FSDC is not now, and never has been, focused on trophies. Our only concern is whether you can defend yourself and your loved ones against assaults of all kinds, several bad guys at once, knives, guns, kidnap, home invasion, protect your family, and more. |
At FSDC you will learn

If a class gets too big, we make another class, and we have plenty of classes on schedule to choose from. We are particular about students who really want to learn. You do not need to be an athlete to learn what we teach. It is important to us to serve as anti-drug/drunkenness/abusive roll models to our young people … in Practice as well as advertisement. If you are head of a martial art studio (legitimate Sensei of minimum Sandan rank) in the Unifour area and find any of our information is incorrect, render us courteous contact with hard evidence indicating otherwise and proof of your credentials and we will cheerfully alter our presentation. • We are the only studio in the Unifour which adapts Self Defense Solutions to assaults to the student’s physical strengths and/or limitations. • We are the only studio in the Unifour to establish a curriculum which allows a student to choose/mix/match from Chinese Kick-Boxing, Stick & Staff Fighting, Street Grappling, Women’s Self Defense, and T’ai Chi for one price-under $80.00 a month. • We are the only studio in the Unifour to offer Life-Time Locked-In rates to enrolling students. • We are the only studio in the Unifour to establish a true full-time program with 6 days regular training; more than 20 hours on schedule available to adults who work any shift. • We are the only studio in the Unifour to offer an Instructor Certification Program which goes beyond technical skill. • We are the only studio in the Unifour to perform criminal record and character checks on all adult applicants. |

Classes are in Brookford and within easy access of Granite Falls, Hudson, Lenoir, Morganton, Valdese, Vale, Gastonia, Maiden, Newton, Conover, Catawba, Statesville, and Taylorsville.
